Family Surf Camp Costa Rica: The Ritual of Return for 4+ Years

Words by Travis Bays

There is a specific moment, usually around 2:00 PM on a Saturday in Uvita, when the van doors slide open and the humid, sweet scent of the Costa Rican jungle meets the salt air. For most, this is the start of a vacation. But for a growing number of our extended family, our “Ohana,” this is simply the Ritual of Return. 🌊

When a family chooses to come back to Bodhi Surf + Yoga for their fourth, fifth, or even sixth year, they aren’t just booking a simple surf trip. Instead, they are returning to a place where their children grew up in the whitewater, where they learned the names of the local palm trees, and where the true meaning of Pura Vida shifted from a catchy slogan to a lived responsibility.

For many parents, the mental load of planning the perfect family getaway is exhausting. You want adventure, but you need safety. You want relaxation, but you desire a meaningful, screen-free connection with your kids. Stepping off that van isn’t just a welcome; it’s a deep exhale. It is the realization that for the next week, you are completely held by a community that knows you.

“Our family of four, two adults and two kids, visited Bodhi last month. All four of us came away exhilarated… Miraculously, the Bodhi team managed to enrich each of us, each with diverse interests – techie dad, yogini mom, sporty son and bookworm daughter. And to make things better, they do it while caring for the environment… It’s inspiring.”

Beyond the One-and-Done: The Power of Intentional Family Rituals

In the search for a premier family surf camp in Costa Rica, many travelers get caught in the “newness” trap, constantly seeking a different beach or a bigger resort. But at Bodhi, we believe in the quiet power of the familiar.

Vacation time is precious. It is the one week a year where the screens are tucked away and the family unit is allowed to breathe. The “Ritual of Return” eliminates the gamble of travel. You already know the beds are comfortable, the food is nourishing, and the surf instruction is world-class.

More than convenience, returning creates a beautiful benchmark for growth. Parents get to watch their children evolve from nervous beginners clinging to the board in the shallows to confident Ocean Guardians paddling out back to catch their own green waves.

Designed by a Family, for Families

We understand the complex dynamics of traveling as a family because we live them every single day. Bodhi is fundamentally a family-run business. Our own daughters grew up alongside the growth of this surf school, learning the ropes and riding the waves right here in Uvita.

This deep empathy for the family experience is why we strictly adhere to our “Small is Beautiful” philosophy, capping our sessions at a maximum of 10 guests per week. We refuse to operate like a mass-market resort because true connection requires space, intimacy, and time.

“Absolutely delightful people and so thoughtful of every detail… The surf teachers…where do I begin? Articulate, professional, skilled, patient, intuitive…They artfully connected with my prickly teen to end up hearing her share her gratitude for their patience with her in a group setting at the end.”

Lisa P., Illinois, USA

Peace of Mind in the Lineup: Our Commitment to Water Safety

Bodhi Surf + Yoga is the optimal place to learn how to surf. Our instruction team brings over 30 years of combined surfing and coaching experience to the whitewater. Our instructors are certified by the International Surfing Association (ISA) and hold up-to-date First Aid and CPR certifications.

We maintain a strict 5:1 student-to-instructor ratio. It is very common for children under the age of 12 to have their own dedicated, one-on-one surf instructor in the water.

Plus, we operate in the protected, sandy-bottomed waters of the Marino Ballena National Park, which is actively monitored by park rangers and lifeguards. This environment ensures your family can focus entirely on having fun, rather than worrying about dangerous currents or rocky bottoms.

As your family progresses each year, we ensure you have the right equipment under your feet. If you are curious about how we match boards to skill levels, check out our guide on Choosing a Beginner Surfboard.

“Both Adrianne and Spencer were able to go with the flow with our kids. As a parent it was nice to be able to focus on my surfing knowing my kids were safe and having fun.”

Your Jungle Home Base: Safety at the Lodge

That sense of security extends from the beach right back to the Bodhi lodge. Our property is managed by a dedicated team of five to six staff members, including an onsite operations manager, and the owners live right on the property. We treat this space like our home, and we guard it with the same care we would for our own children. 🏡

Dinner as an Adventure: Why We Aren’t All-Inclusive

A family having dinner at a restaurant in Costa Rica during their family surf camp.

While your week includes 5 breakfasts, 3 lunches, and 1 welcome lunch, we intentionally leave dinners open. If you are used to all-inclusive resorts, stepping out for dinner might sound like a chore; however, walking into town is actually a vital piece of cultural immersion.

Uvita is incredibly accessible, with TripAdvisor listing dozens of local restaurants within a short, safe walk from our lodge. Whether you want a cozy night ordering delivery or a lively walk to a local soda (a traditional Costa Rican diner), you have options. It gives your family a chance to practice Spanish, support the local economy, and explore community life.

“The food was great, and not having every meal provided actually works out really well – it encouraged us to explore the community and connect.”

Toby R., Alaska, USA

The Welcome Day: Stepping into the Community

A stay at Bodhi is an invitation to become part of the Bahia Ballena community. During your Welcome Day, we lead our guests on a Community Culture Walking Tour through the streets of our town.

Walking the streets and meeting local business owners helps our guests transition from feeling like transient tourists to feeling like welcomed community members. To understand the deep roots of the people you are meeting, you can read up on A Brief History of Uvita, Costa Rica before your arrival.

Planning Your 2026-2027 Season: School Vacations Guide

Timing your family surf camp around the school calendar can be tricky. Here is a quick guide featuring our best insights to help you choose the ideal window for your family’s return ritual during our upcoming season:

  • Fall Break (November): The transition month. The lush, vibrant jungle of the green season is spectacular, and you will find beautifully uncrowded lineups. While there is a higher chance of late afternoon rain showers, the morning surf conditions are often pristine.
  • Short Holidays (Thanksgiving, Presidents Day): A perfect 7-day escape from the mid-semester routine. The weather is transitioning into the sunny dry season, making it a great mid-year reset. Just be sure to book flights months in advance, as these quick windows are incredibly popular.
  • Winter Break (December – January): The ultimate escape from the cold. Expect bright sunshine, offshore winds, and the vibrant start of the dry season. Because this is peak season, spots fill up very quickly and require early booking to secure your family’s space.
  • Spring Break (March – April): Peak dry season with maximum sunshine and consistent waves. The national park and town will be bustling with a fun, vibrant energy. It is highly sought after, so plan ahead if your family loves a lively atmosphere.
  • Summer Break (June – August): This is one of our absolute favorite times for families to visit. Known as the “Veranillo” (little summer), this season offers a slower, calmer pace in Uvita. The tropical green season is breathtakingly beautiful, featuring cooler afternoons and the incredible arrival of migrating Humpback whales in the Marino Ballena National Park. It is a profound time to connect with nature without the peak-season crowds. (Curious about what else you might spot? Here are 10 Animals You Are Likely To See in Costa Rica). 🇨🇷

What is the food like? What if we have dietary restrictions?

Our food is filling, nutritious, locally sourced, and completely homemade. The Bodhi team members are avid foodies who strive to exceed guests’ expectations. We easily cater to specific dietary restrictions, including vegetarian, pescatarian, vegan, gluten-free, lactose-free, and nut allergies.

No. Transportation from the airport and to all scheduled activities is fully included. Most everything else (restaurants, local shops, and banks) is easily accessible by foot.
