What Guests Have to Say

Ocean Guardian Pledge

Before anything else, Bodhi was extremely COVID safe. They followed all the protocols and we always felt very safe. Both the surf and yoga lessons were brilliant, because they each taught more than just the exercise. They also taught us the philosophy, and the fundamental principles of each discipline. We couldn’t think of a better way to learn surfing or practise yoga. Go. Go stay with them. Do it now.

Bodhi Family Surf Camp

We are a family of four; parents late 40s, daughters 11 and 12. We’re in pretty good shape, travel extensively and were looking for a unique experience. I can say we found that experience at Bodhi. The lodging (we were in the Gratitude bungalow) was great. Comfortable, clean and spacious with everything you'd need for a week long surf camp. Overall, it was exceptional. The people, the place, the vibe, the mentality, the food - all excellent. It was like staying at a friend's house.

I enjoyed it very much and I am grateful for everything [they] taught us. This is definitely something every surfer and ocean lover should do. I will continue practicing in low tide.

As someone who has never been super comfortable in the ocean, I felt apprehensive about learning how to surf. Bodhi's week long curriculum is put together so well, with each day building on the skills from the previous day.

I think there is a strong spiritual element to surfing. It's one of those sports that brings you so close to nature as you are completely in it head to toe. Travis explained to us how each time he first goes into the water for a surfing session, as he gets out into the white wash he lies face down floating in the water between waves and gives deep thanks to Mother Ocean. Gratitude is a strong underlying theme at Bodhi.

Travel safely

We are fortunate to be uniquely positioned to provide a fun and learning experience while also complying with rigorous health and safety standards based on Costa Rican law and best practices from travel experts worldwide. Being an outdoor tourism provider and having a small lodge, Bodhi Surf + Yoga has been able to operate with minimal changes to our procedure. We are located in a small town that is not densely populated or over-touristed. Our community has been very proactive in terms of implementing protocols to ensure the safety of both visitors and residents.

Learning and adventure

Our goals at Bodhi Surf + Yoga are to keep your family safe, engaged, and learning throughout the week. We teach the fundamentals of surfing and highlight environmental awareness all while connecting your minds, bodies, and spirits. By the end, you are equipped to take these activities with you in your lives and even do them independently! Any surfer will tell you that surfing is more than just a pastime — it is a lifestyle.

At Bodhi Surf + Yoga, our biggest aim is to awaken purpose; to help your family have physical, mental, and spiritual “a-hah!” moments of inspiration and achievement; and to give you truly soul-gratifying (perhaps even life-changing) experiences! We delight in providing memorable adventures that facilitate learning, laughing, and growth.

Ample time for the family

The Bodhi Family Surf Camp offers ample free time, allowing your family to add on to the Bodhi Surf + Yoga experience. Some opt for low-key, quality family bonding: playing board games, going on walks together, or doing an adventure tour like sea kayaking or zip-lining. Others choose pure relaxation: chilling in the pool, reading in the hammocks, or having some fun beach days.

Regardless of what your family opts to do, there are many options, and the Bodhi Surf + Yoga team will be here to help you — providing our knowledge and assistance on booking tours, navigating the community, and answering any questions you may have!

When you choose the Bodhi Family Surf Camp, you can expect to have a fun-filled, physically active, learning vacation. Transportation and logistics are taken care of to reduce stress and promote relaxation and family bonding time. At the beginning of the week, your family will participate in five surf lessons. Later in the week, you will have time to do other tours or add on private family yoga classes.

Also included: a tour of the community, a visit to the local waterfall, and delicious, healthy meals enjoyed family-style at the lodge. Even with all this activity, there will be plenty of time to relax and unwind, whether that’s relaxing around (or in) the pool, lounging in the hammocks, playing board games in the common area, or wandering around the community!

Daily breakfast (except on your free day) and three dinners are included in your week-long stay in Bahia Ballena. Meals are made with love and are hearty, healthy, and have locally-sourced ingredients. We can accommodate dietary restrictions! Your other meals can either be prepared at the Bodhi lodge (every bungalow/room has access to cooking space) or you can support the local economy and learn more about its culture by sampling local fare.

The Bodhi Family Surf Camp is designed for families who have different needs than groups of adults. This option has the flexibility to be just what you and your family need: it can be a relaxing vacation with a few activities but plenty of restful down time to ease your body, mind, and spirit, all the way to an intensive physical learning vacation that challenges you and your family in new ways, or something in between.

While you’re here, you will have ample opportunity to learn about the community of Bahia Ballena, including the town’s history, development, and challenges. The beauty of the Bodhi Family Surf Camp is that it provides a taste of Bodhi Surf + Yoga and plenty of time to see what our spectacular community has to offer!
