Why dedicate two weeks?
This is the ideal retreat for any prospective waterwoman or man, or anyone looking to immerse themselves in one of our planet’s most magical places — the ocean. It has been said that to reach success in anything, you need to dedicate 10,000 hours. While this is not a 10,000 hour program, it is immersive enough (pun intended) to be a great start! The retreat is also the perfect amount of time to truly disconnect with fast-paced, modern life and reconnect with nature, self, and purpose. The added bonus: the backdrop of this two-week retreat is a B Corp and 1% for the Planet Certified surf and yoga camp located in a pristine natural environment.
WEEK 1: Bodysurfing + Ocean Awareness
The first week of the Bodhi Awaken retreat is designed to empower guests to feel safe and confident in the ocean, to help them understand how it moves, and to impart them with skills and knowledge in the most simple form of catching a wave — wave sliding or bodysurfing. Whether you are an ocean-newbie or an experienced surfer, you will gain even more skills and confidence in the ocean by dedicating time and effort, and with deliberate practice. The icing on the cake: all of this ocean time is in the Marino Ballena National Park, Central America’s first marine protected area, and a gorgeous and untouched region of Costa Rica. The water is clean and warm, the views of mountains reaching the ocean are impeccable, and there is space to learn this new skill with freedom and ease!
WEEK 2: Topping it off with surfing + yoga
On the second week of the retreat, guests transition into Bodhi’s pinnacle surf and yoga camp — Bodhi Sessions. With the ocean savvy developed in the first week of the retreat, transitioning onto a board will be more seamless and effective than if they were to just “dive in”. Everything from Bodhi’s tried and tested 5-session surf curriculum is included, simply with the added benefit of the previous week’s ocean experience. And to top it all off, the 5-session Bodhi yoga curriculum that is designed to do so much more than stretch, but to go deeper into the self utilizing the breath, physical postures, and yoga philosophy. Side effects of this entire 2-week retreat may include: inspiration to become environmental stewards, motivation to continue physical activity, and the desire to live purposefully!

WHAT TO EXPECT
BEST TWO-WEEK SURF, YOGA AND OCEAN AWARENESS RETREAT
Whether you are a newbie to surfing and the ocean, an experienced ocean person, or somewhere in the middle, if you are someone who wants to become comfortable in the ocean — learn more, or improve your surfing — this two-week retreat is for you. You will learn about ocean safety, swim techniques, and how to surf waves on nothing more than your stomach. You will learn about the history of surfing (both body and board), as well as all of the skills to catch and stand up on green waves! You will tie it all together with restful, invigorating, and regenerative yoga classes on our outdoor platform.
Moreover, you will do all of this (and so much more) in a beautiful place and unique vacation destination — Bodhi Surf + Yoga lodge in Bahia Ballena, Costa Rica. Our community is still small and untouched by the large-scale development that exists in most tropical beach towns. Our lodge is simple yet pristine, and located in the heart of the community. Our vacations are self-admittedly different than the norm: focused on experiential learning, personal growth, and finding connection to a greater purpose. This retreat is a beautiful culmination of all that Bodhi Surf + Yoga has to offer, and will provide a one-of-a-kind, two-week vacation in beautiful Costa Rica.
HEALTHY & DELICIOUS MEALS
Included meals are a Bodhi Surf + Yoga community affair — served buffet-style with all of the guests, and joined by members of the team. They are places of sharing, laughter, and good conversation. As for non-included meals, they can either be prepared at the Bodhi lodge (every bungalow/room has access to cooking space) or you can support the local economy and learn more about its culture by sampling local fare.
PROMOTE RESPONSIBLE TOURISM
Bodhi Surf + Yoga is proud to be a Certified B Corp and 1% for the Planet member — both certifications designed to assure the consumer that they are indeed supporting companies that strive to do business better for both people and planet. At Bodhi Surf + Yoga, we are in business to sustain and improve our home community, as a platform for environmental awareness and action, and to show other companies that responsible business is indeed lucrative.
Bodhi Awaken FAQs
Not only is Bodhi Surf + Yoga the first ever surf and yoga camp to earn a B Corp certification, we are also the first surf camp to offer bodysurfing lessons. Bodysurfing is a crucial tool in the beginner surfer’s repertoire, and offers a completely different and unique connection with the ocean that will ultimately reduce your learning curve when it comes time for board-surfing.
Bodhi Awaken includes: 13 nights of accommodation at the Bodhi Lodge and 1 night of accommodation in San Jose, 10 breakfasts and 6 dinners, 1 swim technique training session, 4 bodysurf lessons, 5 surf lessons, 8 yoga classes, 2 hour-long massages, a walking tour of Bahia Ballena, a waterfall visit, local transportation to camp activities, snacks during surf and bodysurf lessons, National Park entrance fees on lesson days, and a Bodhi t-shirt.
Like any sport, the more time you dedicate to deliberate practice and repetition, the better you are going to perform. Dedicating two weeks allows you ample time to gain more confidence in the ocean and drastically improve your surfing (and bodysurfing) ability. Furthermore, two weeks is the perfect amount of time to truly disconnect from your work life, and reconnect with nature, self, and purpose.
Bodysurfing, as defined by The Encyclopedia of Surfing, is the physical act of riding a wave using only the body as a planing surface; the original and purest form of surfing. Humans have been practicing the art of bodysurfing for centuries, as it is the simplest form of playing in the ocean energy. For more information about bodysurfing, check out this blog post.
When it comes to learning how to surf, the more ocean experience the better, and if you want to reduce your learning curve, then you should spend some time catching waves without a board first. Bodysurfing teaches the individual how to see waves, how to dive beneath them, how to catch them, how to move around other surfers, and how to identify rip currents and other potential hazards. Furthermore, less equipment means less learning steps, more maneuverability, and a deeper connection with the wave.
The most important thing you need to bring for the bodysurf lessons is a tight-fitting swimsuit that will create minimal drag (and will stay on)—similar to what you would wear to swim laps in a pool. Swim fins will be provided for you, but you can certainly bring your own if you already have a pair.
You need to be able to swim at least four lengths of an olympic-size swimming pool (200m) using either a sidestroke or freestyle stroke in order to participate in the bodysurfing lessons. If you are not a strong swimmer, you will spend the week catching whitewater waves in chest-deep water instead of swimming out to catch green waves.
The swim technique training lesson is a pool session that will introduce various stroke techniques and breathing strategies to prepare students for ocean swimming and ultimately enable participants to feel more comfortable in the water. The lesson will include a 200m swim test, so it is a good idea to practice swimming in a pool before attending the clinic.
