A Season of Reset: Surf, Yoga, and the Power of Silence in Uvita

Words by Travis Bays

We are living in a loud, fast-paced world, and for many of us, the constant daily noise leaves our batteries running dangerously low.

This past season at Bodhi Surf + Yoga felt like a powerful reminder that true growth often happens not when we push harder, but when we finally give ourselves permission to pause, breathe, and step completely out of our routines.

Our adult surf + yoga camp in Bahía Ballena, Costa Rica, is designed to be a safe space for your story.

From navigating the quiet lulls in the ocean to finding profound strength in silence on the yoga mat, the past few months have been dedicated to the beautiful art of slowing down.

As we transition into our lush, restorative Tropical Season, these lessons have never felt more vital for the tired traveler.

Surfing with Intention: Ocean Lessons and Trusting the Process

Our local break at the Marino Ballena National Park consistently offered soft, glassy conditions, providing the perfect canvas for our guests to paddle out and safely challenge themselves.

However, the ocean is the ultimate teacher, and its greatest lessons often come when the waves simply stop.

In surfing, periods without waves are called lulls. During a recent retreat, one of our guests realized that a lull isn’t a sign of being stuck, rather, the ocean is simply giving our arms time to recover so we are ready to paddle when the right wave arrives.

Pilar, Bodhi Surf + Yoga co-owner and lead yoga instructor, found a similar lesson in patience during her own time in the lineup. She noted her own struggle with patience, feeling the urge to “get that next wave. I really want things to happen right now, right here, in this moment”.

However, surfing taught her that if she stays there and is patient, the wave will come. Ultimately, Pilar realized that in the ocean, on the yoga mat, and in life, we just need to show up.

Julia, a solo female traveler seeking a reset after a tough year, shared how our ISA-certified instructors guided her through this process:

“Dennis, my instructor, was enthusiastic yet calm and patient. I learned so much from him and he is clearly highly experienced at both surfing and teaching.”

Finding Balance: Mauna and the Courage to Rest

To balance the physical output in the water, our open-air yoga shala served as a sanctuary for deep, nervous-system healing.

Pilar focused heavily on the Ayurvedic principle of Mauna—the yoga of silence.

By reframing silence as a form of wisdom and strength rather than an emptiness that needs to be filled with distractions, guests were able to completely disconnect from the digital noise of their everyday lives.

In this quiet space, guests also found the space to process the anxieties of trying something new. During one class, Pilar played a song featuring the lyric: “And how funny to realize that Fear is really Courage becoming known”.

This sparked a beautiful group realization that fear isn’t a bad thing; it’s our brains’ response to the bravery and courage that comes with putting yourself out there and trying something new.

Burnout, however, isn’t just mental, it manifests physically as deep exhaustion and tension. Our retreat is intentionally designed to support tired bodies.

When a guest named Albert arrived on day one with a travel related back injury, Pilar proactively flagged specific poses to skip and arranged a private, gentler session before the main class. As

Albert summarized perfectly:

“Travis and Pilar have built something genuinely special in Uvita; an intentionally small operation (max 10 guests) where the intimacy isn’t a limitation, it’s the whole philosophy.”

Building Community: Adventures Beyond the Waves

The Communal Connection

Part of the healing process is finding genuine connection without the pressure of forced networking. Because we cap our lodges at a maximum of 10 guests, solo travelers naturally gravitate toward our communal spaces. Leila, a recent guest, perfectly captured the balance between solitude and community:

“I went as a solo traveler and was hoping to have a wonderful week of yoga and surfing and lots of time for journaling, reflecting, and reading. I got that! And I also had a week of really deep connection with the other guests there and everyone working at Bodhi!”

Tangible Community Impact

Our restorative time in nature is tied directly to protecting it. Last June, funds raised by our guest community provided $10,000 to the Costa Rica Coral Restoration lab, allowing them to purchase new stands to protect their coral tanks from oxidizing and rusting.

Visiting the lab and seeing this impact firsthand reminds us of our commitment to traveling with purpose.

The Guest Spotlight: Stories that Stoke the Fire

There is a specific kind of magic that happens when you feel entirely safe to just be yourself. The waves and the community vibe were so welcoming recently that two of our solo female travelers, Caroline and Darsi, individually decided to call their airlines and extend their one-week trips into two weeks.

Caroline shared the motivation behind her impromptu extension:

“I booked one week at Bodhi Surf + Yoga in Uvita and ended up staying two—and that decision came straight from the heart. The staff allowed me to open myself to nature and learning in a way I only had imagined was possible…”

Check out our Guest Experience Stories to dive deeper into the magic behind the Bodhi experience – specifically Caroline and Darsi’s month!

Ready for Your ‘Tropical Season’ Chapter?

The quiet, introspective lessons from this past season are the perfect gateway into our upcoming Tropical Season.

While some regions slow down in June, the South Pacific of Costa Rica simply comes alive in a whole new way.

This is the Deep Reset Season. The afternoon rains are profoundly restorative, turning the jungle canopy into a brilliant, vibrant green. Instead of hiding from the weather, our guests embrace the rhythm of the jungle.

As one returning guest beautifully summarized:

“we still had plenty of fun surfing in the rain, plenty of growth doing yoga on the platform, and relaxing in the cabin listening to the rain pour down while reading and resting.”

Ready to wash away the burnout and start your own chapter of transformation? Explore our upcoming retreats to secure your sanctuary in the jungle. Want to see more behind-the-scenes moments from our lush Tropical Season? Subscribe to our newsletter or follow us on social media.

Frequently Asked Questions about Bodhi Surf + Yoga

Is a surf and yoga retreat too active if I am already burned out?

While we are an active camp, the Bodhi experience is designed to give you back your energy, not drain it. Guests consistently find that the combination of surfing and gentle yoga acts as a total physical and mental reset, with many reporting that they sleep more deeply here than they have in years.

What is the vibe like for a solo female traveler?

Because we follow a “Small is Beautiful” philosophy and cap our lodges at a maximum of 10 guests, the environment is naturally welcoming and incredibly safe. As a recent guest happily reported: “I felt completely safe as a solo female traveller the whole time, and made some wonderful connections with the other guests.”

How does my visit actually help the local community in Uvita?

A $20 per person portion of your stay directly supports the Costa Rica Coral Restoration organization through our Traveler’s Philanthropy Program. For example, funds raised by our community recently allowed the Costa Rica Coral Restoration lab to purchase new, rust-proof stands to protect their coral tanks, ensuring the local reef ecosystems stay healthy.
