Since our inception in 2010, the Bodhi Surf + Yoga owners have been in love with the idea of using our business for the greater good. Our mission statement is "Educating, inspiring, and empowering our stakeholders to live more sustainably through surfing, yoga, nature immersion, and community engagement."
Socially and environmentally responsible business practices have been woven into the fabric of Bodhi Surf + Yoga since day one, and with each passing year, we are working to improve. In 2020, we were honored to receive our second B Corporation certification for having met “rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency”.
Most of all, we have wanted to show both our colleagues and our customers that Bodhi Surf + Yoga is not your average surf and yoga camp, tourism business or vacation destination, and that it’s neither difficult (nor a bad business decision) to utilize your business as a tool for something greater and far more important than just making a profit. We do not take this honor lightly and are up for the responsibility that this certification entails.
To continue in this calling, we currently engage in community programing, local investments, global fundraising, on-site impact reduction, environmental advocacy, and responsible travel.
What is a B Corp?
About B Corps
B Corporations, or B Corps as they are more commonly known, are “for-profit companies certified by the nonprofit B Lab to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency”.
In their respective spheres, B Corp companies share a common goal of doing business better than it has been done historically, and in a way that shows both consumers and industry that business can and should be about more than just making a profit. The Triple Bottom Line (TBL) framework — people, planet, profit — is often associated with B Corporations, as those are the elements upon which they focus their attention. B Corp companies consider their impact on all stakeholders: the environment, the local community, its workers, society, and the planet as a whole, and work to reduce negative impacts while increasing positive ones.
Recognize other b Corps?
At the time of writing, there are around 3,400 companies in over 70 countries that are B Corp Certified; a number of them that we’ve admired for years (e.g. Patagonia, Ben & Jerry's), and some that we’ve even collaborated with (e.g. Klean Kanteen, All Good, Indosole). We are proud to be in the ranks of these great companies and, together, use the power of business to solve social and environmental issues and redefine what it means to be a successful business.
In the end, regardless of industry, we are all connected to one another and to our planet, and thus have a vested interest in one another’s well-being and the health of our natural environment.

Why B Corp is important to us
Bodhi was the fifth company and the first tourism business to be B Corp certified in Costa Rica. Even more exciting, we were the very first surf and yoga camp in the world to earn this distinction. We feel that it definitively puts this amazing life project and experiment, Bodhi Surf + Yoga camp, into the ranks of the many companies we admire — those that use their business as a force for good and create benefit for all stakeholders, not just shareholders.
It’s important to note that companies choose to become B Corps of their own accord, and do so for a multitude of reasons: to start a movement in their communities or industries, to differentiate themselves from competitors, or simply because it makes better business sense. For us at Bodhi Surf + Yoga, becoming a B Corp seemed like the logical next step in solidifying the values and actions of corporate responsibility that have existed as long as our company itself. We also believed that the B Corp certification, through B Lab’s triannual review process, would help us to continue developing and improving our business by providing accountability and validating the steps we’ve already taken.
How does this benefit Bodhi guests?
When you choose to vacation at Bodhi Surf + Yoga camp, you are, in essence, putting your money towards sustainable tourism and responsible business practices. By supporting a B Corporation, you can be confident that you are contributing to the efforts of a company that supports its community, treats its workers fairly, and cares for its home environment. You are also rejecting the traditional business model that values profits above all else and fails to consider the entire impact of its operations. Your patronage makes you part of a movement that aims to shake up the existing system and create a market where companies compete to be not best in the world, but best for the world!
“Best for the World” accolades!
We are proud to have received B Corp’s “Best for the World: Community” designation for three years in a row (2017, 2018, and 2019). What does that mean? We scored in the top 10% of our category (the categories include Environment, Workers, Customers, Community, and Transparency) based on our 2017 Impact Assessment.
