How One Company is Cleaning Up Waterways with Your Purchase

Bodhi Surf + Yoga / Surf + Yoga Camp Blog / How One Company is Cleaning Up Waterways with Your Purchase

How are you an environmental leader? Answer this question by entering our 4th Annual Ocean Guardian Contest for a chance to win the grand prize of a surf & yoga camp for two and other sweet products!

United by Blue is an outdoor apparel company located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that sells clothing, accessories and other items that you might need while exploring nature. It was started with a passion for the world’s ocean and waterways, a desire to contribute positively to the environment, and an idea of how to inspire others to get involved. With the idea of associating the sale of a product with an environmental action, United by Blue was founded in 2010. For every product sold, United by Blue has pledged to remove one pound of trash from oceans and waterways by means of cleanups that are organized and hosted by the company itself.

We are very happy to have them as partners in our 2016 Ocean Guardian Contest.

United by Blue Donation Swag

Leading by example

They started this company by getting their hands dirty — hosting their first cleanup the same week they sold their first t-shirt. To tackle the problem of pollution in our waterways, they stopped writing checks and started organizing cleanups to do the work themselves. The founders of United by Blue created their company because they wanted to make a positive impact on our planet and encourage others to do the same by means of showing them you’ve got to start somewhere.

The amount of plastic in our oceans and waterways are huge: 8 million tons of plastic enter the oceans each year. Plastic bottles alone comprise 1.5 million tons of that plastic waste annually. That’s why they also only use responsible materials for their products, such as recycled polyester which reuses plastic bottles so they won’t end up in the ocean’s gyres.

B Corps environmental apparel company

So far they have done 155 cleanups in 25 different states in the U.S, totaling 312,402 pounds of trash removed. On their web page you can sign up to help out with the cleanups they host. They don’t accept donations, they want you to get your hands dirty by joining the team and other like-minded volunteers to pick up plastic bottles, tires, and even abandoned trucks from rivers, streams, creeks, and beaches.

A certified B Corps company

United by Blue is a certified B Corps company, meaning that they adhere to the rigorous standards set forth by the nonprofit B Lab to contribute positively to social and environmental movements. They believe that for-profit companies are in a prime position to affect positive and meaningful change, and that as global citizens, they have a responsibility to take action. Naturally, they have found a friend, ally, and cheerleader in Bodhi Surf School, and we are greatly inspired by the business model they have created.

United by Blue contributes to the #OGC2016

United by Blue will be donating organic cotton t-shirts, socks, and notebooks from their collection of responsible products for participants of our fourth annual Ocean Guardian Contest.
The organic cotton T-shirts come in men’s medium and make a great environmental gift for friends, co-workers, and family members. The socks are recycled cotton Bartram’s, and the notebooks come in Adventure bound three-pack. All the products are designed to last a great many adventures and are built using responsible materials.
