As of August 2018, Bodhi Surf + Yoga has been a proud member of the global network of 1% for the Planet. Because the work we do is grounded in environmental stewardship it was an easy decision and a great way to amplify our impact. More than 2,000 businesses and individuals around the world are also part of the network. We wanted to take a minute and explain how it works and what it’s all about!
The pieces: Businesses, individuals, and nonprofits
1% for the Planet is inherently a network made up of three distinct entities:
- Businesses like Bodhi Surf + Yoga
- Individuals like yourself
- Nonprofits like Changing Tides Foundation
1% for the Planet business
The more than 1,800 business members that make up this network are mission-driven and committed to improving their impact. From small businesses like ours, to huge multinational companies like Patagonia, there is no shortage of diversity within the business community of 1% for the Planet. Committing to 1% for the Planet is a simple way for a company to show the world that they care. Here are some companies we work with that are active 1% for the Planet members:
1% for the Planet individuals
Everyday people around the world are also committing to 1% for the Planet through the individual membership program. Individual action matters and it contributes in a huge way to the work of 1% for the Planet. Our guests at Bodhi Surf + Yoga are the perfect example of everyday people who care and the individual membership program with 1% for the Planet can give those people an easy platform to spark action. Here are some individual members you may have heard of…
1% for the Planet nonprofits
And finally, the nonprofit partners of 1% for the Planet are the on-the-ground organizations that are fighting the fight, doing the work around the globe to protect and provide for the planet we call home. Nonprofits around the globe are benefiting from the 1% for the Planet network — making connections and receiving funding that otherwise would not have been possible. The network allows these nonprofits to amplify their impact and create lasting change. Nonprofit partners cover one or more of these six issue areas: climate, food, land, pollution, water, and wildlife. These incredible nonprofit organizations are tackling some of the toughest problems of our time. Here are a few 1% for the Planet nonprofit members that Bodhi Surf + Yoga has supported:
- 5 Gyres
- Surfrider Foundation
- Adventure Scientists
- Center for Responsible Travel (CREST)
- Leave No Trace
- French Broad River Academy
The process: Joining 1% for the Planet
The process of giving 1% for the Planet is quite simple. To join 1% for the Planet businesses (or individuals) commit to donating 1% of their annual revenue (or salary) to vetted environmental nonprofit partners through monetary and/or volunteer support. Absolutely any business or individual can join 1% for the Planet — the more the merrier! Nonprofit partners are nominated by current business/individual members and then vetted by 1% for the Planet to ensure each nonprofit is doing good work which is environmental in scope.
After joining 1% for the Planet as a business or individual member, the 1% team provides partnership advising — connecting businesses and individuals with nonprofits that align with their specific mission. The goal of advising is to create thriving partnerships with the potential of leading to long term support and a greater impact. Donations are then made annually and certified by 1% for the Planet. This legitimizes members’ commitments and makes the 1% for the Planet a brand you can trust.
This framework has been incredibly successful for both businesses — who get to sell their products/services with the 1% for the Planet label — and nonprofits — who can spend more time working on the issues and less time worrying about funding. In fact, 1% for the Planet members “have invested over $225 million in environmental nonprofit solutions”.
The goal: Increase philanthropy towards environmental causes
Today, only 3% of philanthropy goes toward environmental giving, according to Giving USA. Bodhi Surf + Yoga and 1% for the Planet want to change that. Everyone has 1% to give, so why not give back to the planet that has given us so much?
Bodhi Surf + Yoga is a 1% for the Planet member because we want to spark big change. We are a small business, operating in a small community, but we want to have a large impact. As 1% for the Planet members, we are better able to make that impact. We can all contribute something and 1% for the Planet makes it possible to bring all these contributions together and give it back to the Earth.
Come to Bodhi Surf + Yoga and join 1% for the Planet as an individual member
Starting in January 2020, Bodhi Surf + Yoga is strengthening our partnership with 1% for the Planet by spearheading a new project to have every one of our guests become an individual member. The experience we try to provide is one that we want our guests to hold on to and bring home. We aim to do more than teach you how to stand on a surfboard or do a downward dog — we aim to educate, inspire, and empower. Our Bodhi Surf + Yoga world revolves around the breathtaking place we call home and we want to do as much as humanly possible to protect Mother Ocean and planet Earth.
After a week of environmental inspiration, our guests often ask for ideas or ways they can improve their impact on the planet. By signing guests up to automatically join 1% for the Planet we are hoping to create a long lasting commitment between people and planet. We get the ball rolling by covering your initial membership fee and creating the path towards environmental giving. Then the new members take the lead – whether it is through a few hours at a beach clean-up or community garden or an annual donation made to an environmental nonprofit that aligns with their values. Individual members have the option of fulfilling their commitment through volunteer hours or monetary support.
This is a new partnership we hope our guests will be excited about! So come to Bodhi Surf + Yoga, join 1% for the Planet, and start the path to a healthier you and a healthier planet.
