Bodhi Surf + Yoga / Surf + Yoga Camp Blog / Bodhi Surf + Yoga Honored with 2019 “Best For The World” Accolade

Bodhi Surf + Yoga is thrilled to have scored in the top 10% of all Certified B Corps in the Community category this year. This means that, for the third year in a row, we have received the “Best For The World” honor! From B Lab (the independent third party that certifies B Corps): “These businesses are proving that competing not only to be best in the world but best for the world is a winning strategy, and they can lead the way as mainstream businesses join our movement.” We are excited to receive this honor, and further motivated to continue working to be the best for the world, to inspire other businesses to follow suit, and to motivate consumers to choose responsibly.

B Corp Best For The World Community

2019 “Best For The World” Honorees

At the time of writing this, there are 3,023 companies in 150 industries and 64 different countries that are working on a shared goal of “using [their] business as a force for good”. Within those 3,000+ companies, 1,200 were on this year’s “Best For The World” list. From B Lab: “Certified B Corporations, spanning dozens of industries and countries, lead by example by valuing people, purpose and public transparency along with profit while demonstrating how these multiple stakeholders are crucial to future economic success.” It is an incredible honor to receive this distinction within and from a group of peers who are already, arguably, the best in the world already in terms of responsible business.

Bodhi Surf + Yoga recognized in the Community category

Bodhi Surf + Yoga has been recognized for three years in a row in the Community category. What does this mean? That we are in the top tier of businesses impacting and/or being involved in the local community, featuring community service or charitable giving, and having a product/service that is designed to solve social issues. From B Lab: “By investing in communities, these honorees work every day to build a shared, sustainable prosperity for all. Their mission-driven cultures embrace social engagement, charitable giving, and strong, diverse communities.”

A big reason that we have been recognized in this category is based on the following of our programs or projects:

  • Service + Surf Saturday and Yoga for the Community
  • Travelers’ Philanthropy
  • Donation of multiple vacation packages to various NGOs and non-profits
  • Being a Certified 1% for the Planet member
  • Bahia Ballena Plastic-Free Coalition and Semilla de Ballena
  • Resources (time, money, labor ) invested in the community with help from our partnerships with companies like Global Leadership Adventures
  • You can read more about all of our last year’s worth of corporate social and environmental initiatives here

Why this movement matters

The B Corp movement empowers companies of all sizes and structures to take action on pressing issues of the times. It empowers consumers to “vote everyday” for a better future, by where they choose to make their purchases. B Corp movement also encourages governments of all types to pass important Benefit Corporation legislation that allows companies to do solidify and continue the good work that they do. It is increasingly relevant due to how it addresses the complex nature of the problems that face our world today. The B Corp movement is a multifaceted solution to a series of multifaceted problems. It involves all of the different players and utilizes existing the capitalist system of which we are all a part.

B Corp travel + tourism working group

We Bodhi Surf + Yoga are thrilled to capitalize on this amazing network of companies to learn, grow, share, and teach. We believe that we can all gain something and share from one another. Therefore, we are excited to be leading a working group for companies that are within the travel, tourism, and hospitality industry. This idea started last summer, and representatives from at least 15 companies met for the first time at last year’s B Corp Champions Retreat in New Orleans. Since early this year, we have been meeting monthly. The intention of the group is multifaceted, but the main goals are the following:

  • Be in communication with one another, foster a community of responsible travel and tourism companies, and be able to work together
  • Pull from one another’s knowledge and experience; create “Best Practices” for us all to learn from one another and for future B Corp certified travel and companies
  • Work together to co-market B Corp in general, as well as responsible tourism and travel
  • Show (with data) how B Corp travel and tourism companies are indeed doing it better

We’re thrilled to be a Certified B Corp!

We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again. These last three years of having our B Corp certification have been some of the best for us at Bodhi Surf + Yoga. This is in large part because we feel like we are not just floundering along by ourselves. We are now a part of something greater. We belong to a network of businesses that don’t just claim to care about their workers, society, the environment, or the pressing problems of the time. These companies prove themselves capable of taking strong action on the things that matter through tireless work, outside-the-box decisions, and creative innovation. For us at Bodhi Surf + Yoga, this is the best possible group we could have aligned ourselves with! We look forward to what’s to come in this movement.

Congratulations to all of the 2019 Best For The World Honorees, as well as the two other companies from Costa Rica!
