Bodhi Bodysurfing + Ocean Awareness Retreat
Multiple dates in 2019-20 (see below)
Hosted by Hannah Walsh and Spencer Dunlap
Starting November 2019, Bodhi Surf + Yoga will be offering an ocean awareness and bodysurfing retreat every seven weeks. This week long ocean safety clinic will be hosted by Bodhi staff members Hannah Walsh and Spencer Dunlap. Hannah and Spencer were each introduced to the ocean at an early age, and have many years of bodysurfing experience under their belts. Their goal is to share their knowledge and passion for the ocean to as many people as possible while spreading the “art” of bodysurfing around the world. Whether you are a beginner with very little ocean experience, or an accomplished surfer who is looking to add bodysurfing to your repertoire, this clinic will provide you with the foundation to take your ocean savvy to the next level.
What is Bodysurfing?
Here at Bodhi, we believe bodysurfing is more than the simple physical act of catching and riding a wave with your body (i.e. without a board). Our definition of bodysurfing also encompasses ocean awareness, breath holding and lifesaving techniques, and environmental stewardship. Although bodysurfing is the simplest act of riding a wave, the activity is not a global phenomenon (like board surfing) because it is not very profitable. The surf industry generates revenue by manufacturing boards, fins, leashes, wax, etc., whereas all a bodysurfer really needs to catch a wave is a decent pair of swim fins. Thus, bodysurfing is a soulful art form whose practitioners benefit greatly from their simple elemental connection with the ocean.

Spencer Kruse Dunlap is a former Division I athlete, reader, writer, photographer, traveler, surfer, and nature enthusiast. Born in Southern California, Spencer spent his early childhood in Adelaide, Australia, and his formative years in Denver, Colorado. After graduating from the University of San Diego in 2016 with a degree in Environmental Studies, Spencer lived on the island of Kauai where he was further exposed to bodysurfing culture and big waves. His dream is to spread his love of nature and preserve the ocean for current and future generations. He believes that “wave sliding” is the single most important act contributing to his health and positive outlook on life.
Hannah Walsh one day hopes to develop gills so she can spend all her time in her happy place — the ocean. Being raised on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Hannah has connected with the water in all forms as an ocean lifeguard, surfer, swim instructor, and competitive swimmer. She swam competitively for ten years, specializing in distance freestyle and butterfly, competing collegiately until she decided to leave the chlorine behind for the salt water. Hannah has since been working as a water videographer and has produced short films with the intention of spreading love to the ocean to inspire more people to protect it. Her video work has allowed her to travel to new waves, and find a second home in Costa Rica. Hannah’s constant and base passion in life has always been bodysurfing, and she thinks the world will be a much better place with more “fishpeople” in it.
