Can you believe that 2017 is already coming to a close? On one hand, it has felt a bit like a “scooter to the ankle” (as that viral tweet suggested); on the other, it’s been an interesting and even enlightening year. One thing is for certain: vast global changes are occurring (and are occurring quickly), and to many, this phenomenon can feel very stressful. Now more than ever, it’s important for each of us to practice self-care so that we can be our best selves — ready and able to help care for and contribute to our communities, both local and global.

Here are three ways that a surf and yoga camp at Bodhi Surf + Yoga in Costa Rica can help you be on your A-game going into the New Year.

1. Physical invigoration

Modern life and city dwelling often don’t offer much opportunity for meaningful physical expenditure. Our bodies are tools, and if they are not used consistently (just like any tool), they can weaken or even deteriorate. However, routines can be incredibly difficult to break, and often times, a catalyzing event or seismic “shake-up” is required to make profound and lasting life changes. One of our goals at Bodhi Surf + Yoga is that our vacation experiences motivate our guests to make the changes that they want to make in their lives — whether those be physical, mental, or spiritual.

The Bodhi Surf + Yoga camp experience is very physically invigorating. With five sessions of surfing and five yoga classes in six days, there is a lot of energy stoked, micro (and macro) muscles utilized, and fire created in a short amount of time. Combined with the walks, the massage, and the healthy eating, Bodhi guests are reconnected with and reminded about their physical selves. They are also invited to push themselves in ways that they may not normally push themselves, and the results can be astounding. Guests often leave with the motivation they need to continue this physical activity when they’re back home, whether that’s through a regular yoga practice, surfing (if possible), or something else entirely — like walking, hiking, or biking.

2. Mental revitalization

As we all know, modern life, with all of its benefits and comforts, can also be very stressful and overstimulating for our minds. Today’s reality is that most of us in the Western world are always on the go — darting from work to social events, and running errands in our already-meagre spare time. More tellingly, the moments of potential quiet and downtime are filled with cell phones, computers, and televisions. Yet just like our electronic devices need a hard reset from time to time, so too do our minds — they need to have the caches cleared and to power down for a beat so they can restart, fresher than ever.

The experience at Bodhi is more than just physical, it’s also very mental; and the combination of pushing both physical and mental boundaries is a recipe for holistic transformation. Over the years, we (the Bodhi owners) have observed our guests really taking advantage of the opportunity to disconnected for awhile. In their downtime, guests are hardly ever on their phones, opting instead to talk amongst each other, go for a stroll through town, read a book in the hammock, and float in the pool. For us, it’s truly a delight to see, and it shows us how much our guests need this time and space to simply reside within the present moment.

3. Soulful inspiration

Taking a breather is good and necessary, but sometimes we need more than to just enjoy a superficial “break”. Sometimes, we need a profound existential reminder about our purpose, our hopes and dreams, and our potential. The English translation of the word Bodhi is “awakening” or “enlightenment”, and at Bodhi Surf + Yoga, we have come to recognize that the opportunity that we offer gives our guests a chance to awaken their purpose. Now this may be either a reawakening or a new awakening, but time and time again, we have heard stories about how, after a week at Bodhi Surf + Yoga on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, people are inspired to go home and live what they consider to be more purposeful lives.
